The full case for never carrying a credit card balance

Here's the conversation I have with anyone who tells me they're 'bad with money.'

Being bad with money is not a personality trait — it's a skill gap combined with a system gap. Almost everyone who says they're bad with money hasn't actually set up the systems that make good financial behavior automatic.

Here's the minimum viable financial system: (1) autopay all bills, (2) automatic transfer to savings on payday before you see the full balance, (3) no-fee HYSA for emergency fund, (4) 401k contribution at least to the employer match, (5) Roth IRA opened at a reputable brokerage and set to auto-invest monthly in a total market fund.

Once these five things are in place, 'being bad with money' becomes much harder. The system runs whether you're disciplined or not. You can still overspend on discretionary items but you can't accidentally not save.

The people who feel bad about their finances most frequently are the people who try to manage money through willpower and tracking alone without automation. Install the system first.
