My strategy for rebalancing a three-fund portfolio without tax drag
I've run three side hustles seriously over the past five years: freelance writing, selling refurbished electronics, and tutoring. After 24 months, only one was still going.
Freelance writing: peaked at about $1,200/month but consumed enormous time finding clients, pitching, and dealing with scope creep. The effective hourly rate after overhead was around $18/hour — not bad but not transformative.
Refurbished electronics: too volatile. When I found good deals it was profitable; most months I couldn't find enough sourcing to make it worthwhile.
Tutoring: $60-80/hour, fully flexible schedule, referrals grew organically until I had a waitlist. This is the one I kept. It's not passive income — it's a second job — but it's extremely high ROI on time.
My takeaway: the best side hustle leverages a skill you already have at a rate significantly above your implicit hourly value.
