What festival do you recommend for a beginner?

Shoegaze and the recording studio as instrument is a philosophy that shapes everything about how the best records in the genre were made.

Kevin Shields has talked extensively about Loveless as a record where the studio was as much an instrument as the guitar. The recording process itself — the specific combinations of overdubs, the way certain tracks were layered, the physical manipulation of tape — was compositional rather than just documentational. The record that exists couldn't have been created any other way.

This approach to the studio creates records that are genuinely unreproducible. You can learn the guitar parts, you can approximate the gear, but you can't recreate the specific series of decisions and accidents that created the record. The studio-as-instrument philosophy treats the recording as a unique artifact rather than a documentation of something that exists independently.

The implication for home recording is interesting: if the studio is an instrument, then the home recording setup — however limited — is also an instrument. The constraints become possibilities rather than just problems to work around.
