In the best math rock, the guitar and the rhythm section are in a genuine dialogue — neither is primary, both are composing simultaneously, and the interesting thing is the conversation between them. The guitar is as rhythmic as the drums; the drums are as melodic as the guitar. The bass can occupy any position in this hierarchy depending on what the arrangement requires.

The challenge in writing math rock is creating this dialogue without either element overwhelming the other. The failure mode is complexity for its own sake — technical demonstrations where the complexity obscures rather than creates musical meaning. The successful version is complexity that creates tension and resolution in ways that simpler music can't.
