Procreate's color dynamics: making brushes that paint themselves

The relationship between reference and imagination in drawing is widely misunderstood, and the misunderstanding causes a lot of unnecessary struggle.

Common misconception one: using reference is for beginners. Real artists draw from imagination. In fact, professional concept artists and illustrators use reference constantly. The skill isn't drawing without reference — it's knowing which reference to use, how to interpret it, and when to depart from it.

Common misconception two: drawing from imagination means inventing without reference. It actually means drawing from the visual library in your head, which was built from years of observation and reference study. The imagination library has reference as its source material.

The actual skill to develop: observing reference with understanding rather than copying it mechanically. This is slower than tracing but the knowledge transfers to imagination work. Mechanical copying produces a good reproduction and no learning.
