My favorite pixel art color palettes and where I found them
I want to share what I've learned about the business of selling original digital art prints, because the logistics are more complex than selling downloads.
The printing question: finding a print lab that produces quality results for digital art on fine art paper is the foundational step. I've tried several services and have settled on one that consistently produces accurate color. The sample order is essential before committing to a lab.
Paperstock selection: different papers produce different results. Matte fine art paper gives a traditional painted quality. Glossy photo paper gives a photographic quality. Metallic paper produces a luminous effect that works well for highly detailed digital work. The paper selection should match the aesthetic of the work.
Limited editions: I number my print runs and certificate of authenticity every print. This changes the commercial dynamic — a limited edition print is a different product from an open edition. Limited editions price higher and sell to a different buyer.
The fulfillment question: I use a print-on-demand service that handles printing and shipping so I don't maintain inventory. The margin per print is lower but the operational overhead is near zero.
