I want to document my experience with the Inktober prompts specifically as a creative research tool rather than just a daily drawing challenge.
The prompt as constraint: each Inktober prompt is a single word or short phrase that can be interpreted in countless ways. The creative exercise is not 'what is the correct illustration for this prompt' but 'what is the most interesting interpretation I can find.'
My process for prompt interpretation: for each prompt, I spend five minutes writing associations — not visual associations, conceptual ones. 'Drift' might become: continental drift, snowdrift, emotional drift, drifting away from a relationship, the Japanese motorsport. The unusual associations often produce the strongest images.
The quality of the interpretation reveals something about the range of a creative imagination. Artists who always interpret prompts literally produce competent work. Artists who find unexpected angles consistently produce memorable work.
The Inktober community benefits from seeing unusual interpretations — the most engaged posts I've made during the challenge have been the ones where my interpretation wasn't obvious.
