The definitive 3D tier list
The experience of participating in online art collabs has taught me things about professional collaboration I wouldn't have learned any other way.
The main discovery: creative decisions made in isolation are different from creative decisions made in response to others. In solo work you're always the authority. In collaborative work you're sometimes the initiator and sometimes the responder, and both modes require different skills.
The practical challenge: visual consistency across different artists' contributions. The collabs I've been in that work best have a clear visual style document agreed on before anyone starts drawing — color palette, line weight, rendering approach. Without this, the final work looks disjointed even when every individual piece is technically good.
The unexpected benefit: seeing how other artists solve problems you've been approaching the same way for years. Every collab has introduced at least one technique I've incorporated into my solo practice.
