Drawing vehicles and mechanical objects: the grid method

I want to share my experience with the specific challenge of drawing hands and what finally made them feel manageable rather than something to avoid.

The structure breakthrough: hands are a fan of five rays attached to a palm block. The palm block is the base form. The fingers are the rays. When I started thinking of the palm as a volume — not flat but with thickness and perspective — the fingers attached to it became logical extensions rather than mysterious appendages.

Foreshortening: hands are frequently foreshortened in interesting positions. I practice drawing hands pointing directly at the viewer (maximum foreshortening) and in tight grips, because these are the positions that challenge the understanding most directly.

The daily practice that worked: I keep a small pad near my desk and draw my own hand in different positions during phone calls, during video pauses, during any moment when my drawing hand is free. The accumulated hand studies over a year produced visible improvement without dedicated study sessions.
