Classic car appraisal tips before you buy at auction
My experience with the Cobra jet and Super Cobra Jet designation in the Ford FE engine family, because the naming convention confuses people and causes buying mistakes.
Cobra Jet: the 428 cubic inch engine with hydraulic lifters, a cast iron intake, and a factory-rated 335 horsepower. Available in the 1968-1970 Mustang and other Ford vehicles. Reliable, torquey, and strong for a street car.
Super Cobra Jet: the 428 with a heavier-duty rotating assembly, the drag pack option, an oil cooler, and a mechanical lifter camshaft. Available only with the Drag Pack option, which also included a Traction-Lok or Detroit Locker rear axle. Factory-rated the same 335 horsepower but with meaningfully more capability.
A car claiming Super Cobra Jet status should have the Drag Pack code on the data plate and the correct date-coded components. The designation matters for both originality and value.
