My experience shipping a classic car overseas — lessons learned
The 1969 Ford Boss 429 Mustang was built for NASCAR and deserves to be understood in that context. The 429 cubic inch engine needed homologation — NASCAR required manufacturers to sell 500 street-legal examples — but the engine was too large to fit in the Mustang's engine compartment without significant modification.
Ford outsourced the conversion to Kar Kraft, who modified the front suspension mounting, moved the shock towers outward, and repackaged the front of the car to accept the massive engine. The result is a car that required significant engineering to make street-legal.
The 375 horsepower factory rating was conservative. The engine's design — semi-hemispherical combustion chambers, large-port cylinder heads — was built for sustained high-rpm operation. On the street, the Boss 429 is a strong but not extraordinary performer. On the track, it was competitive at the highest level.
