Hot take: patina cars are more honest than a fresh resto
The 1967 Mercury Cougar is the Ford Mustang for people who wanted slightly more luxury with their performance. The Cougar used the Mustang platform with a longer wheelbase, more interior room, and more standard equipment.
The Cougar GT and GT-E performance packages are where the muscle car conversation happens. The GT-E offered the 427 FE engine — the same unit that went into Shelby and Cobra applications — in a car that provided a different driving experience than the Mustang.
The Cougar community is small but knowledgeable. Parts availability lags the Mustang but is improving as the car's appreciation moment approaches. The first-generation Cougars from 1967-1968 are the cleanest design and the most collectable.
