The definitive E-Type tier list

The 1968 Ford Mustang GT/CS California Special is one of the most regionally significant Mustangs of the first generation. Ford and the California dealer group collaborated on a visual package that was initially available only in California, hence the name.

The GT/CS package added specific side stripes, rear quarter extensions, a unique deck lid, and specific emblems. The mechanical options were the same as any GT Mustang — 289, 302, or 390 engines in various states of tune.

The regional availability has made documentation particularly important. Cars claiming California Special status should have the specific trim codes on the data plate. The visual package was distinctive enough that copies appear; the data plate codes are harder to fake.
