Budget travel in Iran: extraordinary history, complicated logistics

The budget traveler's guide to Airbnb experiences and whether they're worth the cost.

The standard Airbnb Experience price range: $25-80 per person for 2-4 hour activities. Food tours, cooking classes, local market visits, art workshops, neighborhood walks. More expensive than free walking tours, cheaper than packaged group tours.

When they're worth it: the specific experience is genuinely harder to find independently (a home-cooking session with a local family, an artisan workshop, a food market tour with a local who knows which stalls to use). The host has genuine expertise and the small group size (typically 1-6 people) enables real conversation and customization.

When they're not worth it: the experience is something you could arrange independently with a bit of research. Many 'local experience' activities on Airbnb are just moderately guided versions of things that are self-navigable. A 'traditional market tour' that takes you to the same market you could visit alone for free is not worth $35.

The alternative to evaluate first: Withlocals, GetYourGuide, and local tour operators often offer similar experiences at lower prices. A local cooking class booked through a guesthouse recommendation is usually cheaper than the same class on Airbnb.

My budget-justified use cases: 2-3 Airbnb Experiences per month of travel when the specific activity is genuinely better or more accessible through the platform. Budget $50-100/month for these as part of the experience allocation.
