Can we talk about points for a second?
I want to talk about the economics and experience of solo vs group budget travel because the calculus is more complex than 'solo is cheaper per person.'
Costs that favor solo: accommodation with private rooms is more expensive solo (can't split), but a dorm bed is cheaper than any split private room. Activities with shared vehicle costs (safaris, island tours, jeep rentals) are significantly more expensive solo because you can't split.
Costs that favor groups: private rooms and apartments split among 2-4 people often beat the per-person cost of dorm beds. Cooking together in a shared accommodation allows bulk buying. Split transport for anything with a fixed vehicle cost dramatically reduces per-person expense.
The non-financial considerations: solo travel gives you complete itinerary freedom, forces you into social situations that build travel confidence, and means every compromise you make is your own choice. The downside is the cost of activities that are more fun and more affordable with others.
My current approach: travel solo but with an open schedule to join up with other travelers for specific activities. Met two people at breakfast heading to the same island? Go together and split the boat. Three people at the hostel all want to rent scooters for a day? Suggest going together for mutual navigation. This captures most of the cost benefits of group travel without sacrificing solo flexibility.
