Front lever: the complete progression from tuck to full
The Back Lever: Intermediate Static Skill
The back lever is one of the most achievable intermediate static skills and one of the most visually impressive for the level of difficulty. Here's the complete path.
The position: hanging from the bar or rings with your back facing down, arms behind you, body roughly horizontal. The shoulder is in significant extension — this is why shoulder preparation is essential.
Shoulder flexibility requirement: you need enough shoulder extension range to take your arms behind your body while hanging. The skin the cat is both the test and the preparation — if you can complete a full skin the cat comfortably, your range is sufficient.
Tuck back lever: the entry point. From an inverted hang or skin the cat bottom position, bring the legs into a tuck and hold. The shoulder angle at this point is usually 90-100 degrees of extension, which is accessible for most people after skin the cat prep.
Straddle back lever: open the legs in a straddle while maintaining the position. Lower back, longer lever, more demanding.
Full back lever: legs together, body straight. This requires significant shoulder extension range and full-body tension.
