ELI5: why does pistol squat work that way?

Cossack Squat: Hip Mobility for Calisthenics

The Cossack squat is one of the best single movements for developing the hip mobility required for pistol squats, straddle positions, and wide-base movements in calisthenics. Here's how to practice it.

The movement: stand with feet wider than shoulder-width, toes out. Shift your weight to one leg and descend into a deep squat on that side, while the other leg extends straight with the foot flexed. The working side reaches full depth; the extended leg stays long.

Where people get stuck: adductor tightness in the extended leg, and hip flexor tightness preventing the deep squat on the working side. Spend time at the bottom of each position — 20-30 seconds — before shifting.

Progression: start with feet wider for more comfort. Hands on the floor for balance assistance. Over weeks, bring the feet closer together. Eventually, hands on hips, full depth, fluid transition between sides.

I do 5 slow Cossacks each side as part of my lower body warm-up. Three months of this made my pistol squat depth and comfort improve measurably. The hip mobility carries over broadly.
