Gymnastics Rings: Setting Up Outdoors
Outdoor ring training is one of the best training setups available — free, available year-round (mostly), and requiring nothing but a structure to hang from. Here's how to set it up well.
Structures: trees with horizontal branches at 3-4 meters height are ideal. Scout for branches with at least 10cm diameter — thin branches bend or break under dynamic load. Pull-up bars at outdoor fitness areas. Sturdy overhead beams in covered outdoor spaces.
Ring height: the bottom of the rings at approximately hip height works for most exercises. For muscle-ups, you want more height — the rings at roughly head height allows proper kicking up and swinging. Set them once at muscle-up height and step on something for support holds.
Safety check before loading: physically grab the strap attachment point and pull hard with bodyweight before any dynamic work. Trees can have hidden rot. Check after rain or strong wind.
Weather: slight wind doesn't affect most ring work. Strong wind affects balance exercises. Cold temperatures stiffen the straps and reduce grip. Wet wood rings become slippery — dry them before training.
