Front Lever Straddle: The Underused Progression
The straddle front lever sits between the advanced tuck and the full front lever in the progression chain, and it's the one most trainees rush through too quickly. Here's why it deserves more time.
The straddle lever is adjustable: a wide straddle is nearly as easy as the advanced tuck; a narrow straddle approaches the difficulty of a full front lever. This means you can use it as a continuous progression rather than a single position to check off.
How to use it: once your advanced tuck hold is confident (15+ seconds), begin straddling progressively. Start with legs at 90 degrees from each other. Over weeks and months, close the angle. This creates a smoother progression curve than jumping directly to full.
Training tip: in the straddle position, actively try to squeeze the legs together. Even if they don't move, the activation of the adductors contributes to the hip extension control that the full front lever requires.
