Beginner's guide to Azul?
Twilight Struggle might be the best two-player game ever designed and it is almost never mentioned in modern board game discussions because it is complex, long, and brutal to new players. The card-driven mechanic is central — every card can be used for its operations value or its event effect, but events in your opponent's hand trigger when you use the card for ops. The tension of deciding when to trigger unfavorable events is genuinely agonizing.
The historical fidelity is exceptional. The events map onto real Cold War history in ways that reward players who know the period. Playing as the Soviets or Americans gives you access to historical events that actually happened and creates emergent narrative that feels real.
For groups willing to invest fifteen hours in learning before enjoying the game, the payoff is one of the deepest competitive experiences in the hobby. For groups that want accessibility, this is not the correct recommendation.
