Weekly Board Games discussion thread

The legacy game format changed my thinking about what board games can be. The permanence of your decisions — writing on cards, destroying components, adding stickers to the board — creates stakes that no non-legacy game achieves. The fear of making the wrong choice is real. The satisfaction of a good outcome is amplified by the knowledge that it is truly yours.

Pandemic Legacy Season 1 remains the best entry point because it is designed for groups unfamiliar with the format. The permanence escalates gradually rather than hitting you immediately. The narrative rewards attention without punishing players who miss details.

Risk Legacy invented the format. Charterstone reframed it as a legacy city-builder. Betrayal Legacy applied it to a haunted house. The format is not universally applicable but the games that have used it well have produced some of the most memorable gaming experiences in the hobby.
