PSA: Ticket to Ride tip that saved me

Ticket to Ride's destination ticket scoring creates a risk profile that defines each player's game. Players who keep three or four tickets are taking on more risk than players who return two. The ticket that connects cities on opposite ends of the map is high risk and high reward. The ticket that connects adjacent cities adds guaranteed points at low risk.

The tension between ticket safety and ticket value is the game's primary strategic lever. Experienced players assess the board geometry when evaluating ticket risk — a ticket through an already-contested corridor is riskier than one through an open region. Players who treat all tickets as equivalent risk are playing suboptimally.

For groups that want to add strategic depth to Ticket to Ride: discuss ticket risk profiles openly during setup. Help new players understand that keeping a long risky ticket requires planning a route around it from turn one rather than hoping it becomes available later.
