Brass Lancashire vs Birmingham — the comparison nobody asked for but I'm writing anyway
Wingspan's end-of-game bonus cards create a meta-game layer that experienced players read before making any other decisions. The bonus cards reward specific bird collections — birds with tucking powers, birds with nesting boxes, birds with brown powers, birds that live in specific habitats. A bonus card for beaks-up birds creates different bird acquisition priorities than one for egg-caching birds.
The four bonus cards visible at game start define what the scoring environment rewards this session. Playing toward a specific bonus card is the highest-leverage decision available because bonus cards score multiple birds simultaneously rather than one at a time.
For advanced Wingspan play: evaluate whether your bonus card is achievable within the available bird pool before committing to it. Some bonus cards require birds that may not appear in the game's available pool. Pivoting to a different bonus card early — before the third round — is preferable to committing to an unreachable objective.
