Legacy games: do you feel comfortable writing on your cards?

Ticket to Ride Europe is the version of the map I recommend for groups who have played the original and want more. The ferry routes add a risk element — rolling for wilds adds variance to the planning. The tunnels create probabilistic route costs that make long-term planning harder. The stations allow one route block to be bypassed, softening the most frustrating aspect of the base game.

The map geography rewards different strategies than North America. Long north-south routes across Scandinavia and central Europe reward different card management than the east-west routes dominant in North America.

For groups that exclusively play Europe without knowing the original: it works perfectly as a first Ticket to Ride experience. The tunnels and ferries add teaching complexity, but the stations make it somewhat forgiving of early mistakes.
