I made a mistake with Terraforming Mars and learned the hard way

Wingspan's bird tray refresh mechanic — discarding all birds between rounds — creates a secondary economy of bird availability that shapes drafting across the whole game. Cards that were available but not taken become unavailable. Cards that were taken remove them from opponents' access. This creates implicit early drafting pressure even when a specific bird is not yet immediately useful.

The tucking and caching mechanics create end-state effects that compound throughout the game. A tucking bird placed early can accumulate fifteen or twenty tucked cards by game end, which scores enormously. A caching bird with five or six cached resources scores well even if you never access those resources for food. These accumulating effects reward early placement of birds with long-term value.

For players developing their Wingspan strategy, practice evaluating birds not just for their immediate activation value but for their potential accumulated value across the remaining rounds. A weak bird early can be stronger than a strong bird late.
