Pandemic's cubes are the most efficient physical representation of urgency in board game design. A single cube is a reminder. Two cubes is concern. Three cubes is a crisis requiring immediate attention. This three-stage visual indicator is immediately legible to every player simultaneously without requiring communication.

The city connection network creates a visual map of outbreak risk. Clustered cities with high cube counts near connected cities create visible cascade risk. Experienced Pandemic players can assess the board state in ten seconds by scanning cube distributions and connection densities.

For new Pandemic players: learn to read the cube map rather than the individual city counts. A single city with three cubes connected to cities with two cubes is more dangerous than three isolated cities with three cubes each. The outbreak chain is the mechanic to manage proactively.
