The Gloomhaven rabbit hole goes deeper than I thought

The Golden Ages of board game design is a phrase I have heard applied to multiple different decades, which suggests we are either perpetually in a golden age or the concept is not useful. What I can say with confidence: the current period of game design has produced more thoughtful, accessible, and mechanically innovative games than any prior decade. The BGG top 100 today is dramatically stronger than the top 100 of 2010.

What has driven this: digital playtesting tools that reduce iteration time, crowdfunding that funds niche designs that would not survive traditional distribution, an online community that provides rapid feedback to designers, and a global audience that has grown the market enough to sustain professional design studios.

The games we play now are better than the games our parents played at game night. This is not a critique of those games — the limitations they operated under were real. But the advances in design craft are genuine and worth celebrating.
