Ark Nova vs Terraforming Mars — the eternal debate

Codenames' spymaster role creates a specific cognitive challenge: finding a single word that connects two, three, or four target cards without touching opponent cards or the assassin. The constraint of the negative space — the cards you must avoid — creates a puzzle that is easier to see from the outside than from within.

The best Codenames spymasters develop a systematic approach rather than waiting for inspiration. Scan your cards for conceptual clusters first. Find two-card connections before looking for three-card connections. Only reach for a five-card clue if all five cards obviously share a category that none of your opponent's cards or the assassin can claim.

For groups learning Codenames: let experienced players be spymasters in early games rather than rotating immediately. Understanding the spymaster's cognitive process as a clue giver first makes the guesser role more interesting. Once you have guessed well several times, the spymaster role becomes more accessible.
