Pandemic: expectations vs reality
My most satisfying board game moment was a Spirit Island four-player game on Difficulty 5. We were on the final invader stage with multiple blights threatening to cascade. Two spirits were near threshold. The board looked lost.
Then the combo that we had been building toward for the last three rounds came together. A series of fear events triggered consecutively, a pair of high-power spirit cards cleared two key lands simultaneously, and the final invader action resolved without triggering the cascade we had been dreading.
We sat in silence for a moment before anyone spoke. Then someone said 'I cannot believe that worked' and we all laughed. That feeling — earned victory after genuine struggle — is what the best cooperative games promise. Spirit Island delivers it more consistently than any other game I own.
