Gloomhaven: Forgotten Circles — too hard?

Heavy euros have a reputation problem that I think is partly earned and partly unfair. The complexity is real — a first play of Brass Birmingham or Ark Nova or Lacerda's Lisboa can feel overwhelming regardless of how good the rulebook is. The problem is that the complexity is front-loaded. After three plays, heavy euros often feel more intuitive than medium-weight games with more scattered rules.

The unfair part of the reputation: heavy euros are not inherently exclusive. They require patience from your gaming group, not genius. A thoughtful teacher, a first game at a lower difficulty, and a willingness to accept a learning loss all make heavy games accessible.

My recommendation for players looking to enter the heavy euro space: start with Brass Birmingham. It is complex but teaches itself through play. The two-era structure creates a natural checkpoint. The theme is tangible. Most people who finish their first game of Birmingham want to play again immediately — that is the best advertisement any game can have.
