Unpopular opinion: Azul is overrated

Cosmic Encounter is the negotiation and chaos game that every gaming group should own at some point. The alien power asymmetry is genuinely extreme — some aliens break rules in ways that should not work but do. The negotiation during encounters is real dealmaking. The table talk is part of the mechanism rather than incidental to it.

The game scales brutally. At two players it barely works. At three it is fine. At four or five it becomes the chaotic diplomatic experience it was designed to be. At six with the right group it is a masterpiece of social gaming.

For groups that enjoy direct confrontation and negotiation, Cosmic Encounter is essential. For groups that prefer strategic puzzle-solving without interpersonal conflict, it is the wrong game entirely. Know your group before bringing it out.
