Teaching heavy games: one session or multiple?
Viticulture is the game I return to when I want worker placement that feels thematic rather than purely mechanical. Placing workers in the seasons — planting in spring, growing in summer, harvesting in fall, fulfilling orders in winter — creates a rhythm that feels agricultural even when the mechanics are pure optimization.
Essential Edition is the version to own. It incorporates Tuscany's grande worker, the better visitor cards, and the visitor card deck expansion that makes replayability much higher. The base-only Viticulture is a lesser experience.
Viticulture World is interesting and worth knowing about — a cooperative mode that replaces competitive play entirely. For groups that prefer co-ops but want the core Viticulture experience, it is a good alternative. For competitive groups, stick with the standard mode.
