Is it just me or has Ticket to Ride gotten worse?
Spirit Island's core tension is the choice between protecting existing settlements and destroying invaders. Both are necessary. Neither alone is sufficient. Learning to balance them across different game states is the primary skill the game develops.
The power card selection each round creates a secondary economy. Reclaim your discard pile or continue spending cards? Powers that allow reclaim become more valuable as the game progresses. Major powers are stronger but occupy card slots. Minor powers are more efficient but cap out earlier.
The island board geography creates different strategic challenges depending on spirit placement. Spirits that work well in isolated interior positions are different from spirits that need coastal access. Understanding which spirits work with which board configurations is an advanced skill that takes many plays to develop.
