The two-player game category is one of the strongest in modern board gaming. Designed-for-two games understand that the play experience at two is fundamentally different from scaled-down multiplayer: direct interaction, complete information about the opponent's strategy, and faster feedback loops between decisions and consequences.
Fossile is my favorite pure abstract for two. 7 Wonders Duel is the best card game for two. Patchwork is the most satisfying short session game. Twilight Struggle is the deepest strategic experience for two players in the hobby. Star Wars: Rebellion sits between wargame and euro in a way that creates epic asymmetric experiences.
For couples new to the hobby, Patchwork and Azul are reliable starting points. Both play in under 30 minutes, both are immediately intuitive, and both create interesting decisions without requiring rulebook study.
