Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion as an entry point
Wingspan's forest habitat birds are the most diverse in the card pool in terms of power type. Cached resource birds, birds that activate other birds, birds that interact with your bird tray, birds that generate food based on dice — the forest creates the most mechanically varied bird pool to draft from.
The forest's action — gain food from the birdfeeder based on a rolled die — is the most variable action in the game. High food rounds enable aggressive bird playing. Low food rounds require more conservative turns. Managing around birdfeeder variance is a skill that separates experienced players who adapt to the dice from beginners who plan around assumed food availability.
For Wingspan players who find food scarcity frustrating: add birds with food-generation powers to your forest earlier than feels necessary. Having two or three birds that activate food generation when others take food from the feeder creates a buffer against birdfeeder variance.
