Science fiction board games: best of the genre

Wingspan teaches resource management through a resource constraint that is so gentle in early plays that new players sometimes do not notice it. Food is scarce enough to require planning but abundant enough that a wrong decision does not end your turn meaningfully. Eggs cost a bird card to lay but generate multiple scoring opportunities. Cards in hand represent future possibilities rather than immediate resources.

This gentle constraint design is pedagogically excellent. New players develop resource management intuition without experiencing the punishing consequences of poor resource management that Agricola enforces. By the time players reach the advanced strategy of Wingspan, they have internalized resource management through positive reinforcement.

For experienced gamers who find Wingspan too light: the resource management is genuinely tighter than it appears in early plays. The card hand management — your hand is also your end-game bonus objective — creates constraints that experienced players feel more than beginners.
