My experience with Spirit Island after 5 years
Scythe's encounter cards are the best flavor text in any euro game. The vignettes — short narrative scenarios that let you choose between three options, each providing different resources or upgrades — are well-written and mechanically relevant. Reading them does not slow the game meaningfully and adds texture to the alternate history world that the art and factions establish.
The faction lore is similarly engaging. The Rusviet-Imperial union, the Nordics' mechanical bears, the Albion's cryptid-powered machines — the world building is consistent and imaginative without requiring engagement to enjoy the game mechanically.
For players who approach Scythe as pure optimization, the encounter cards can be read quickly and their resource choices made efficiently. For players who engage with theme, reading them carefully adds a story layer that the base mechanisms gesture toward but do not deliver alone.
