I was today years old when I learned about Spirit Island
Agricola is one of the most stressful games I own and I mean that as a compliment. The food pressure — the constant threat of begging if you fall behind — creates authentic anxiety that shapes every decision you make. You cannot afford to pursue a single strategy without attending to subsistence needs. This constraint is the game.
The deck versions and card variants create significant replayability. The E deck is the best starting point. The I and K decks are harder and more interactive. The full mix creates the most varied experience but also the most difficult to evaluate at setup.
For groups that find Agricola too stressful, Caverna relaxes the food pressure and adds dungeon exploration. It is a gentler experience. For groups that find Agricola insufficiently punishing, Le Havre is the next step — the food system is more complex and the building chain is deeper.
