Catan: expectations vs reality
My Pandemic Legacy Season 1 campaign is one of the best gaming memories I have. The specific decision we made in month 6 that came back to haunt us in month 9. The city that fell during a crisis and remained a scar on the board for the rest of the campaign. The character we lost and had to retire. All of it created a shared history that the group still references.
The experience changed how I think about what games can create. Most board game sessions are episodic — they begin, conclude, and the next session starts fresh. Legacy games create longitudinal narrative. The game remembers what happened. The consequences compound.
I would play Pandemic Legacy Season 1 again with a new group without hesitation. The first playthrough is the best playthrough — the surprises are genuine, the narrative is new, the permanence of your choices has full weight. It is among the best gaming experiences in the hobby.
