What's your hot take on Spirit Island?

Wingspan's scoring at game end rewards players who diversified across multiple bonus card objectives rather than maximizing a single engine type. The end-of-game bonus cards — usually rewarding specific bird types, habitats, or egg counts — create a third point source that balanced players access more completely than specialists.

The tension between specialization and diversification is the game's most interesting strategic question. A specialized grassland egg engine scores maximally in that dimension but misses bonus card points available to diversified players. A diversified strategy scores across multiple dimensions but may not maximize any single scoring track.

For most player counts and most bonus card combinations, balanced diversification outperforms specialization. The exceptions are when bonus cards strongly reward a single habitat or when end-of-round goal scoring specifically targets your specialization. Reading those variables early is an advanced Wingspan skill.
