Honest review of Pandemic after 5 years
Betrayal at House on the Hill is the best introduction to hidden traitor mechanics for groups new to the format. The exploration phase creates genuine tension through tile placement. The haunts — over fifty possible scenarios triggered by different discovery conditions — create enormous replayability even if individual haunts are mechanically uneven.
The balance is genuinely inconsistent. Some haunts heavily favor the traitor. Others favor the survivors. The Widow's Walk expansion adds a new house level and balances out the haunt selection. It is worth adding if you play frequently enough to have experienced multiple haunts.
For groups that want a horror theme and a surprise mid-game mechanical shift, Betrayal delivers that experience consistently. For groups that want balanced competitive play, the inconsistency will frustrate. Choose accordingly.
