Kickstarter board games — the good, bad, and ugly

Gloomhaven's element system creates a planning horizon that spans both players within a round and turns within scenarios. Generating an element on one turn with the intent of consuming it on a later card requires holding that plan across other turns without the element expiring.

Infusing elements for other players creates cooperative dependencies that are different from the tactical positioning dependencies of combat. A Spellweaver who infuses fire for the Cragheart's fire-enhanced attack is making a supporting action rather than a direct offensive action. These cooperative element chains are the most elegant mechanical expression of party synergy in the game.

For Gloomhaven groups that want to deepen their cooperative play: discuss element generation and consumption explicitly during card selection. Identify which player will generate each element and which player will consume it. The coordination overhead is repaid in dramatically more effective turns.
